A fatal motorcycle crash on the 405 Freeway is under investigation after dashcam footage appeared to capture a runaway tire entering traffic moments before a motorcyclist lost control and was struck by a vehicle Wednesday morning, August 26, 2026.
The deadly incident occurred shortly before 11:20 a.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway near Burbank Boulevard in the San Fernando Valley, north of the 101 Freeway. The crash prompted an emergency response and significant traffic disruption as authorities worked to determine exactly what happened.
Dashcam footage recorded by a Tesla appears to show a tire bouncing over the freeway’s center divider from the northbound lanes and entering the far-left southbound lane. The tire can be seen moving into traffic before disappearing from the camera’s view.
Seconds later, the footage appears to show a motorcyclist losing control and falling from the motorcycle. The rider slid across the roadway and into traffic before being struck by a white Toyota SUV.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene, but the motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the location, according to California Highway Patrol officials.
The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and appeared to cooperate with investigators. Authorities have not publicly identified the motorcyclist, and additional details about the victim had not been released.
A central question in the investigation is whether the runaway tire directly contributed to the fatal collision. Although the dashcam footage appears to show the tire entering the southbound lanes shortly before the motorcyclist crashed, CHP has not confirmed that the object caused the rider to lose control.
