The Billings community is mourning after eight members of the same family, including four children, were killed in a shooting at a home on White Star Circle before the residence was set ablaze Sunday evening, August 23, 2026. Authorities described the incident as a family disturbance that escalated into a devastating act of violence.
Police received a 911 call shortly after 6 p.m. reporting an active shooting at the residence. When officers arrived, they heard additional gunfire coming from behind the home. Within minutes, the house was engulfed in flames, creating an extremely difficult and dangerous scene for first responders.
Authorities later identified 44-year-old Alan Michael Smith as the suspected gunman. Investigators said Smith was related to the victims. He was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and later died, meaning there will be no criminal trial to provide answers about the motive or full circumstances of the attack.
The victims ranged in age from 7 to 92 and represented four generations of the family. They included Smith’s parents, Dana and Barbara Smith, his 92-year-old grandmother Evelyn Smith, his sister Megan Ghekiere, and four children: Owen Ireland, 13; Chloe Ireland, 7; Landon Ghekiere, 15; and Charlotte Ghekiere, 12.
One of the most heartbreaking details to emerge from the investigation concerns 12-year-old Charlotte Ghekiere. A family friend said Charlotte called 911 during the attack in an apparent attempt to get help for her family. She has since been remembered by those who knew her as a hero for trying to summon emergency assistance despite the danger around her.
Investigators have been working through the remains of the heavily damaged home to recover evidence and establish exactly what happened. The fire destroyed much of the residence, making the investigation particularly challenging. Authorities have said that important questions may never be fully answered because the suspected shooter also died.
Reports indicate that Smith had previously lived at the home but had been asked by his parents to move out several weeks before the shooting. Family members have described tensions surrounding his behavior, although investigators have not established a definitive motive for the killings.
The tragedy has deeply shaken Billings residents. A memorial has begun forming near the neighborhood as friends, relatives and community members gather to remember the victims. A candlelight vigil was also planned as the community searched for ways to support the surviving family members.
