A police-involved shooting on Kingston’s Waaban Crossing has left a 28-year-old man seriously injured and prompted an investigation by Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
The incident happened at approximately 9:40 a.m. Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after Kingston Police received a 911 call from a man who was reportedly in distress. Officers responded to the bridge, where a police-involved shooting subsequently occurred.
Frontenac Paramedics attended the scene and transported a male patient to hospital. He was initially described as being in critical condition before the SIU confirmed that the 28-year-old civilian had sustained serious injuries.
The shooting resulted in the Waaban Crossing being closed in both directions, creating disruption for motorists travelling through central Kingston. Police urged members of the public to avoid the area while investigators secured and examined the scene.
Kingston Police said there was no ongoing risk to public safety following the incident. Because the shooting involved police officers, the matter was referred to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit, the independent agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police that may have resulted in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
The SIU has taken over the investigation, and Kingston Police have indicated that they will not release additional information while the watchdog’s inquiry is underway. Investigators are expected to examine what prompted the original emergency call, what occurred when officers arrived and the circumstances that led to the use of police firearms.
Witnesses who may have information about the incident have been encouraged to contact Kingston Police. Authorities are also expected to review available video and other evidence as they reconstruct the events on the bridge.
At this stage, officials have not reported any police officers being injured, and no further details about the man’s identity or condition have been publicly released.
The incident has drawn attention across Kingston as residents and motorists encountered the major bridge closure during the morning. The Waaban Crossing is an important route across the Great Cataraqui River, making an extended closure particularly disruptive.
The investigation remains active, and additional information is expected from the SIU as investigators continue their work.
This is a developing story. Details may change as authorities release further information about the shooting and the condition of the injured man.
