A deadly head-on collision in Caledonia left one person dead and three others injured, including a 3-year-old child, Wednesday afternoon, August 26, 2026, according to the Caledonia Police Department.
Emergency crews were called to Wisconsin State Highway 31, just south of 5 Mile Road, at approximately 3 p.m. following reports of a serious two-vehicle crash. Officers arriving at the scene found a silver Lincoln Town Car and a red Subaru Outback involved in what appeared to be a head-on collision.
According to the preliminary investigation, the Lincoln was traveling south on State Highway 31 when it crossed into the northbound lanes. The vehicle then collided with the Subaru, which was traveling in the opposite direction.
The Lincoln was driven by a 77-year-old man from Mount Pleasant. He suffered critical injuries in the crash and was transported by Flight for Life to an area hospital, where he remained in critical condition.
The Subaru was driven by a 65-year-old woman from Caledonia. An 83-year-old Caledonia woman and a 3-year-old child from Oak Creek were also traveling as passengers in the vehicle.
All three occupants of the Subaru were transported to area hospitals for medical treatment. Authorities later confirmed that the 83-year-old passenger died from injuries sustained in the collision.
The 65-year-old driver suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries, while the 3-year-old child sustained minor injuries, according to authorities.
The crash brought a major emergency response to the area as police officers, medical personnel and other first responders worked to assist the injured and secure the scene. The severity of the collision resulted in significant concern among members of the Caledonia community.
Investigators continue to examine the circumstances that led to the Lincoln crossing into the opposing lanes. Authorities have not yet disclosed what caused the vehicle to leave its lane, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Police are expected to review evidence from the scene and speak with witnesses as they work to reconstruct the moments leading up to the collision. Investigators will also determine whether any additional factors contributed to the crash.
