The Western Pennsylvania community is mourning the tragic death of Karoline Jordyn Heintz, an 18-year-old recent Peters Township High School graduate and incoming PennWest California student whose promising life was cut short on August 19, 2026. Karoline was preparing to begin her freshman year and continue her soccer career with the PennWest California Vulcans when she was fatally killed in Washington County.
Karoline was remembered by those who knew her as a talented athlete, friend and young woman whose life was filled with promise. She had recently graduated from Peters Township High School and was preparing for a new chapter at PennWest California, where she was set to play women’s soccer. Her death has brought grief to her family, classmates, teammates, coaches and the broader soccer community.
Pennsylvania State Police said Karoline was fatally stabbed on Wednesday, August 19. Her body was discovered early Thursday inside her Jeep Cherokee near the California Public Library in Washington County. Authorities have charged her 18-year-old boyfriend, Royce Moser, with criminal homicide in connection with her death. Moser’s mother, Rachel Moser, also faces charges related to the alleged concealment of evidence and the disposal of Karoline’s body. The allegations remain matters for the criminal justice system.
According to investigators, Karoline and Moser had met to discuss their relationship before the fatal incident. Police allege that Moser retrieved a knife from his father’s home and attacked her. Investigators later located Karoline’s vehicle after her family became concerned when she did not return as expected.
The circumstances of her death have added to the shock felt by those who knew her. Karoline was only 18 and was about to begin college, making her death an especially painful loss for a community that had watched her grow and succeed as a student-athlete.
Her soccer community has been among those mourning most visibly. Tributes have described Karoline as a bright, kind and talented young woman, while former teammates, coaches and members of the Western Pennsylvania soccer community have gathered to honor her memory.
Hundreds of people gathered at Trinity United Methodist Church in Peters Township for a candlelight vigil honoring Karoline. Friends, classmates, neighbors, teammates and community members attended the gathering, while PennWest California soccer teammates also came to support her family.
A second vigil was also held at the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer in Elizabeth Township, giving members of the community another opportunity to remember Karoline and stand with her loved ones during an extraordinarily difficult period.
Karoline’s death has also prompted conversations about teen dating violence and efforts to support organizations working to prevent domestic violence. Community members and supporters have begun fundraising in her name, seeking to turn the grief surrounding her death into support for others who may be experiencing abuse or unsafe relationships.
An obituary published by Beinhauer Family Services identifies her as Karoline Jordyn Heintz. A celebration of life is scheduled for September 6, 2026, from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a memorial service from 6 to 6:45 p.m. at Beinhauer’s Peters Township location in McMurray.
For Karoline’s family and friends, however, the upcoming service will be about much more than the circumstances of her death. It will provide an opportunity to remember the young woman they loved, the athlete who pursued her passion for soccer and the daughter, friend and teammate whose future had only just begun.
