An active-threat notification at East Stroudsburg University on Wednesday evening, August 26, 2026, prompted a major law-enforcement response and sent students, staff and families into a period of uncertainty as authorities investigated a reported threat on campus.
The situation began after Pennsylvania State Police received a 911 call at approximately 7:47 p.m. reporting an alleged active shooter at the East Stroudsburg University campus, according to local reports.
ESU issued an emergency notification directing people on campus to shelter in place. The alert identified the area near the University Apartments and instructed students and employees to remain in secure locations, avoid the affected area and not approach responding officers or the scene until an all-clear was issued.
The emergency message immediately raised fears of a possible shooting, with reports and social-media posts circulating rapidly as a heavy police presence was observed around the university. However, authorities did not confirm that a shooting had occurred.
As the investigation continued, Pennsylvania State Police said there was no active-shooter threat on the ESU campus. The shelter-in-place order was subsequently lifted, bringing relief to members of the university community who had spent the evening waiting for official information.
